Our story at Musizi

Our Journey

A Beacon of Innovation, Hope & Service in Uganda

Our story brings together two passionate co-founders who dared to do education differently in this East African country brimming with youthful energy.

Our Journey

The Dream Team

Our story begins with Elaine and Takako, a duo driven by their shared vision to revolutionize education and empower the youth of Uganda. Their journey, rooted in personal experiences and a deep commitment to social change, has led to the birth of Musizi University.

Elaine's School founding

From a young age, Elaine devoured books on diverse subjects, sparking a curiosity and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Frustrated by the limited narrative of Uganda's history, Elaine yearned to explore alternative perspectives and promote indigenous knowledge. This desire to transform the trajectory of education in Uganda led to her co-founding an affordable Ugandan primary and secondary school, where critical thinking, questioning, and independent learning thrived.

Takako's Early Inspiration

Meanwhile, Takako, born in Japan and raised in the U.S., discovered the power of history and the importance of embracing diverse cultures. Influenced by her grandmother's firsthand account of the atomic bomb and her wish for world peace, Takako embarked on a journey to bridge cultures and contribute to a more harmonious world.

Takako's Teaching Career

Through running debate education programs in rural Uganda, she witnessed firsthand the immense value Ugandans placed on education as a catalyst for change and was inspired to begin a teaching career, starting in the US but eventually expanding to Ashesi University, the first liberal arts college in Ghana.

Pandemic Meetup Story

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, Elaine and Takako were virtually introduced by a mutual friend. Their shared interests quickly paved the way for conversations about transforming education, and Takako moved to Uganda in late 2020 to work with Elaine towards the establishment of Musizi University.

Strength in Numbers

Guided by an Akan proverb, Ti koro nko agyina (which translates to “One head cannot hold council”), Elaine and Takako realized that their collaborative efforts would yield wisdom and strength beyond what they could achieve individually.

Dreaming Big Together

Both Elaine and Takako shared the same dream of starting a new university in Uganda. Musizi University would be more than an institution. It represents a collective endeavor to redefine higher education in Uganda. We are proud to provide a unique blend of indigenous perspectives and world-class standards, all while ensuring affordability and accessibility for our students.

The Story Continues

We empower our students, equipping them with the tools to become catalysts for positive change in their communities and beyond. Since its inception, Musizi University has made remarkable progress. Through strategic partnerships, dedicated faculty, and a commitment to academic excellence, we have built a strong foundation for our institution. We hope you will join us in this journey.
